Evidence-led design for high-stakes systems

Projects spanning national case management, accessible publishing, responsible AI, and public-service accessibility.

Creating an accessible, reusable publishing system

Research and component design across five publishing environments informed 17 reusable components and three prototype themes: Marines.mil, Defense.gov, and a branch-neutral theme. The pilot work was accepted for continued development under a follow-on contract.

Evidence · 14 stakeholder sessions · 17 reusable components · Section 508

My contribution · Stakeholder research, comparative analysis, Agile component design, accessibility, and delivery support.

Designing and building an AI research product through a full development lifecycle

I independently defined Sky AI Research (Sky AIR), a qualitative research platform, including its product direction, UX architecture, design system, vertical-slice specifications, accessibility controls, and AI-assisted delivery workflow. I completed its first MVP.

Evidence · Functional first MVP · Live OpenAI integration · Human-reviewed delivery

My contribution · Product strategy, UX architecture, design system, specifications, accessibility controls, and AI-assisted delivery direction.

Making advanced search clearer and more accessible on Medicaid.gov

In a six-week, part-time engagement, I audited and redesigned Advanced Search to clarify filters, active selections, and results. The improvements were tested after my engagement and implemented across the live website.

Evidence · 6 weeks part time · Sitewide production implementation · Keyboard fix verified in production

My contribution · Accessibility audit, interaction analysis, redesign recommendations, and accessible design specifications.

What I bring to complex work

Research depth with the range to move products forward

I connect user evidence, operational requirements, interaction design, accessibility, and delivery decisions so teams can act on what they learn.

01

Research that shapes requirements

Interviews, observation, workflow analysis, surveys, synthesis, and evidence that changes product decisions.

02

Accessible interaction design

Section 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) expertise as a Trusted Tester carried through component design, prototyping, documentation, and testing.

03

Responsible AI product work

Using AI thoughtfully in research practice while designing and building AI-enabled products through a full development lifecycle.

How I work

From evidence to an implementable product direction

I stay close to users and delivery teams throughout the process, reducing handoff gaps and keeping decisions traceable.

  1. 01

    Discover

Understand users, legacy workflows, constraints, and operational risk.

  2. 02

    Align

Synthesize evidence and clarify requirements with stakeholders and product teams.

  3. 03

    Design

Ideate, prototype, test, document, and refine accessible interactions.

  4. 04

    Deliver

Support stories, engineering, QA, adoption, and continued research after release.

Colleague perspective

“Stephanie is a 508/accessibility SME [subject-matter expert], a great UX Designer, a tester, and a developer. Stephanie’s willingness to jump in is very valuable when staffing a small project.”
— Project Manager, Defense Media Activity project

Researcher · Designer · Accessibility leader

A practical leader who can work across disciplines

I lead research and design conversations, mentor designers, partner closely with product and engineering, and stay engaged through testing and implementation. My work is strongest where systems are complex, consequences are real, and clarity matters.
